In the winter of 2012, a US Army Special Forces unit and its interpreters were accused of murdering and torturing Afghan civilians. More than three years later, the US military says that its criminal investigation is still ongoing.
In November 2013, journalist Matthieu Aikins published an investigation in Rolling Stone of the alleged war crimes. He identified the unit involved as ODA 3124, and published eyewitness testimony from both local civilians and the military's interpreters, who accused the Special Forces of being directly involved in the killings. Aikins later published a follow-up report in The Nation in September, 2015, that provided additional details and testimony.
This website, a joint project between The Nation and SITU, offers a spatial presentation of the evidence from his reporting, as well from investigations by the United Nations and Amnesty International. It will also examine the US military's criminal investigation into the allegations, if and when its findings are released.
